  • Overview

    Under direction of the Training Manager, the Instructional Designer is a specialist in their respective Epic Application(s) and supports core functions of the health system’s processes.  The Instructional Designer is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the training program for assigned application(s).  Responsible for translating workflow strategies into training, developing and maintaining course curricula and supporting training materials.  Interacts with department personnel to identify and address customer support needs.  Maintains high credibility and participates in system implementation activities.  Works directly with application analysts and provides input into decisions about system design and workflows. Responsible for maintenance on all training environments, intranet content, and classroom education.  Trains and supports a team of credentialed trainers in their designated application(s).


    • Responsible for supporting all elements of training planning, design, development and implementation for designated application(s)
    • Participate in the development of training policies and requirements for designated application(s)
    • Completes training tasks outlined in the training project plan and established by the Training Manager.
    • Develop and maintain course curriculum, training scripts, and documentation related to the assigned application(s) and workflows.
    • Develop course catalogs and online training materials, including but not limited to, eLearning modules, class companions/workbooks, quick start guides, proficiency exams, checklists and tip sheets.
    • Work with Training Coordinator to ensure appropriate courses, timely planning, management of training materials and maintenance of Epic E-Learning modules within the LMS and/or Intranet.
    • Coordinate training logistics (courses, classrooms, registrations, timeframes, etc.) with the Training Coordinator.
    • Create assessments for end user competency.
    • Responsible for building, testing and maintaining the training environment for designated application(s)
    • Ensures deliverables are approved by the appropriate members of the project team and are completed in accordance with the training strategy.
    • Determines the appropriate level of training (time, delivery method) for each user in designated application(s)
    • Understand workflow practices and how to apply to system configuration in support of hospital/IT strategies, issues, and priorities.
    • Understand and navigate the system build to develop on-line modules for training.
    • Prepare training database with appropriate patient samples and content based on end-user audience.
    • Collaborate with analyst team in workflow analysis, apply workflow knowledge in system configuration and training curriculum design.
    • Trains and supports a team of credentialed trainers in their designated application(s).
    • Incorporates principles of adult learning in training classes.
    • Provide rounding, optimization and go-live support.
    • Attend regularly scheduled meetings.
    • Become familiar with organizational roles and processes.
    • Responds to questions and inquiries on processes, services, and related policies and procedures; identifies potential issues and refers more complex issues to appropriate level of support with Information Services.
    • Participates effectively as a team member in assigned area to achieve team goals and objectives.
    • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
    • Builds rapport and promotes team work by maintaining a professional and positive attitude in the learning environment at all times, working to maintain open and professional lines of communication with all end users and colleagues, and utilizing key change management principles.
    • Executes other related duties as assigned.



    • Associate’s degree in education, healthcare or information technology related field preferred; (will consider combination of formal education and experience).


    • Minimum two (2) years of applicable skills delivering adult education or equivalent relevant healthcare industry experience. 
    • Experience with instructor led classroom training and/or Epic preferred.
    • Experience with tools to create interactive eLearning, simulation, and assessment content preferred.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Superior verbal/written English communication skills, including excellent grammatical, editing and proofreading skills.
    • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Access, Office Suite, PowerPoint, Captivate, Articulate, Camtasia and Outlook) and web browsers.
    • Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
    • Manage multiple priorities.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to be socially perceptive in accepting and relaying confidential information, communicating policies and procedures, and interacting effectively with a variety of Medical Center personnel and outside personnel.
    • Critical thinking and strong problem solving skills.

    Licenses, Certification:

    • Must successfully complete Epic certification within 90 days post last class according to assigned training track(s).
    • Must successfully complete Brookdale Training Instructional Designer I Competency Assessment.

    Physical Requirements:


    • Position requires prolonged periods of sitting and use of a computer and screen viewing throughout the working day.
    • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, sitting, and walking throughout the working day. 
    • Position will be required to stoops, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 25 pounds.
